Local REALTOR® Helps Patients Feel More at Home
Gil Miles, a local REALTOR® with Virginia Real Estate & Development, has been diagnosed with terminal Leukemia twice; once in 2002, and again in 2010. After beating the odds both times, Gil decided to take it upon himself to build a nonprofit organization, called “Wine For Cures.” This all-volunteer organization uses the cultural, entertainment, and health values of wine to produce exciting events and memorable occasions, with the mission of raising cancer awareness and supporting cancer research.
In addition to collecting contributions and items of value, Wine for Cures hosts fundraising events, one of which is the upcoming “Ashland Arts Walk.” This downtown Ashland event, featuring ‘pop-galleries’, encourages over twenty-five area businesses to open their doors to the public, hosting over thirty artists and their work for the evening. The event also includes live music and a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception at multiple locations along the walk. “At our March 30th Ashland Arts Walk, local businesses welcomed the opportunity to host an office open house and interact with the community,” remarked. Among the participating local businesses were the real estate offices of Virginia Real Estate & Development, Hometown Realty, HomeLife Access Realty, and Coldwell Banker Dew Realty.
The next Ashland Arts Walk, Friday, October 26, 5:00p.m.-9:00p.m., will feature a traveling exhibit from Lilly Oncology on Canvas’ recent national art competition. Wine For Cures will be the first non-medical organization to host this exhibit. Cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, friends, family, and medical professionals, are also welcome to exhibit their work and share their story.
Wine For Cures focuses on the little things that can help comfort those undergoing cancer treatments. Currently, Wine For Cures provides local cancer treatment centers with refreshments to help make patients and their families feel a little more at home with some creature comforts. “It may sound like a small thing, but it is important because of the tremendous stress placed on those with a cancer connection, and snacks are a welcome relief,” Miles explained. “In the future, we hope to raise enough to make significant contributions to cancer research,” he added.
Tickets to the October 26th Ashland Arts Walk can be purchased with an advance $20 donation, or a $25 donation during the event at Virginia Real Estate & Development, 202B England St. in Ashland. Donors will receive 3 glasses of wine and a flashing wine glass, in addition to the walking art tour. All proceeds will benefit the Wine For Cures gift fund.
